How to Choose Your Guiding Word

Washington, DC, USA
This is a post about something near and dear to my heart.  Like a time capsule in my mind,  just hearing my one little word from each year brings back a flood of memories, feelings, and lessons learned. Your guiding word, or "one little word" for the year ends up making a big difference. As weeks and months of the year go by it is incredible to see the ways this seed of intention flourishes. This is a tradition I learned of in 2011 and I am excited to share it with you today!

My attempt to write this as succinctly as possible still left quite a bit to share, so I hope you will enjoy this post with a cup of tea and a pen in hand to start jotting down ideas for a guiding word of your very own.

Choosing one little word to carry throughout the year is a precious, meaningful way to promote self-reflection and achieve the kind of goals that breathe fresh air to your soul. Life moves fast, we know this. And when the intensity of circumstances we find ourselves in pushes hard down on us, it is perhaps even more important to reflect and make sense of feelings.

Do you ever stop and wonder, "How am I doing?" I know I do. But how does one even answer a question like that? From comparison games to pure speculation, there are so many dead ends. I know because I have fallen into those very traps. How can I compare my walk in this life to that of anyone else? Each of us are moving, growing, changing in our own ways. Self-reflection helps to intimately and honestly assess ourselves. Sometimes self-reflection happens casually, but this is an intentional process.

So how do you do it? I can only speak from my experience. And yes, I typically choose my word by the end of January but I believe it is never too late. Here is how to get started...
Think about what has been inspiring you lately.
This is important: have no judgments! Inspiration comes from anywhere so do not feel silly when your mind wanders to random things. This is not about social media. There are no "goals" for what inspires you. They do not need to fit any mold of what others expect of you or even what you typically expect of yourself. When I do this, I start to hear various opinions in my mind: Oh that's just ridiculous. Haven't you already done enough of that? Is that even a goal? Aren't there more important things to focus on?

Ignore these opinions that weigh you down.

Approach this with a free spirit and an open heart. This is deeply personal so try to accept your feelings for what they are, no filters! How do you dream of living your life? What is about that person/place/thing that inspires you? Describe it.

Write down words that come to mind about how you want to feel or how you would want another to describe you.
It all depends where we are in life.
I just wish I could...
I can't wait for...
This year is going to be...
I want to be more...

Fill in those blanks, and be honest. If you are dreading something or feeling negative, just admit it. I'm a big believer in emotions as my teachers, or visitors. My one little word this year started with a negative mindset I was dealing with. Addressing it honestly has helped bring goodness where there was once doubt. If you are nothing but excited for life at this moment, brainstorm words that capture how you want the experience to shape you. The year I was getting married I sought to embrace the new role of wife with grace and love, so blossom was my one little word that year.

Browse a list of words others have used.
When you finally hear your word, you just know it. It will feel like it has been waiting for you all along. Some days my word barely crosses my mind, and other days it is my saving grace, bringing my mental state to a place where I feel centered. It helps me find myself when I feel lost.

My one little word for this year is capable. I carry it with me. It is written on the first page of my planner that I open daily, and every so often I do something I used to tell myself I could not do and I am beaming inside because the self-doubts I have are slowly disappearing. Years of subtly telling myself "I cannot" are slowly but surely being replaced with this new energy. I am capable

It is not too late to chose a word, so go for it! You will love it, I promise.

Rainy Sunday at the US Botanic Garden + A Video

United States Botanic Garden, 100 Maryland Ave SW, Washington, DC 20001, USA

One thing about rainy days in DC is that there is always a museum to hop into. And on this rainy Sunday it just made sense to get out of the apartment for awhile and do some exploring. At the botanical gardens there was endless inspiration for ways to hang house plants and help them thrive. I took notes on which kind of soil mixes and plant holders were used. This weekend marked some big progress with orders placed to start our gallery wall and new plant holders delivered. I'm excited!

Believe it or not, this was my FIRST EVER visit to the US Botanic Garden! Each garden has a distinct look and feel. The tropics garden is kept extremely humid and was my favorite. I miss the way humid air made my skin look and feel. Besides the topics there are a handful of different areas with themes such as the dessert, culinary plants, medicinal plants, orchids, and more, plus a lovely outdoor garden.

So these pants...they are "sleep pants" according to the Anthro website but I felt like wearing them out. They are the same as many of my patterned joggers so why not? Okay, maybe I'm crazy but they were comfortable and I have no regrets! I had them on sitting around the house before we left. All I did was change my top to go out. Seeing the potential in each piece of clothing I own is helpful as I am trying to keep my closet to a minimum. It's a process.

Overall I found the US Botanic Garden to be really wonderful and a place enjoyed by all ages. There are a variety of different plant and wellness events every single month and I really want to go to one! Seeing a new place for the first time I was distracted and trying to take in my surroundings, but I did film just enough clips for a very short video. I am getting my DSLR repaired so I can film in higher quality. It is my favorite way to share content. Anything you would love to see? Let me know.

Hope you enjoyed this week's Sundays with Swann Street!

Cookbooks I Love: Porridge by Anni Kravi // Nourish

Washington, DC, USA

Let me just put it out there- my cookbooks are like best friends to me. Between reading the recipe, shopping for the ingredients, the time taken to prepare the meal, and the experience of eating it, there's quite a bit of involvement going on! One thing I always do is read them cover to cover to get a feel for the amount of time and energy the recipes typically require. And I absolutely adore when authors share meaningful, thoughtful content behind how the recipes were created. The anticipation of trying a new recipe is thrilling to me. Even when it is something easy and small, like these chia pudding pots.

The chia pudding (shown above) was made with cardamom and topped with hazelnut (I subbed this because I had a bunch to use up), and coconut flakes. Fresh from the fridge, the cardamom will cool down your whole body the second you take a bite. Do keep in mind that chia seeds are not well tolerated by all. It is recommended to start slowly- perhaps a teaspoon or so and work up from there. Some find soaking chia seeds helps with digesting them, and others have no problems with them at all.

Flipping through the pages of Porridge, there is bowl after bowl of food that looks a lot like art! Really! Anni Kravi dedicated a section of the book to explain how putting the bowls together and arranging the toppings can be a meditative practice. While I am someone known to eat an entire burrito bowl in ten minutes, I try my best to eat slowly and mindfully.

The recipes are simple but require reading ahead because sometimes the toppings require soaking overnight or for a few hours. Best to chose your meal and have everything ready. When I made the quinoa + sweet potato + edamame bowls last night, having all the toppings prepped made it a quick and delicious meal. As well, ingredients are listed in grams and ounces so use a conversion measuring cup and have your food scale handy if you have one. The recipes in Porridge are dairy-free, sugar-free, vegan, and absolutely packed with flavors you never expected. In sum: humble, nourishing recipes with gourmet taste.

Happy Sunday everyone!

Tea with my Bestie at Ladurée in Georgetown

3060 M St NW, Washington, DC 20007, USA
From the dreamy pastel ribbons to the delicious pastries, Ladurée is such a treat, and my company, even more so. This post features macaron flavor and taste profiles plus a few recommendations and tips for planning your visit!

Let's not forget the outfit details! And yep, I wore leggings to a fancy tea house. My goal was to style them with a pretty blouse to keep the look less casual.

Halogen lace-up flats (similar and the same brand)

The best deal is buy the box of 8 macarons for $22.50 (total with tax). The box is made of embossed paper but you can get a set of 6 in a keepsake gift box for the same price. It all depends if you would like to keep the lovely box or not. Now the fun part! I visited Paris a few years ago but I never got to try a macaron from here. Now I see what I was missing out on!

Craving brownies: The chocolate has a brownie-like texture to it! I could eat a few of this flavor.
Something different: Sichuan pepper has a slight amount of tingle. SO yummy and an
Favorite overall: Pistachio, for the nutty and sweet flavor
Not-to-sweet: Green tea
If you like rosewater: try the Lavender, you'll like that too

If you would like to get a table plan to visit before 11am on a weekday. The store hours are 8am - 7pm daily.

As for the line, before 1:30 on weekdays it seems that line ebbs and flows. There were plenty of times there was no line at all! Further, it was never impossibly long or overflowing out door.

For your first visit I recommend getting a tea and the set of 3 pastries: walnut, chocolate, and sugar. Tea is served for one and the majority are $7 each. Pastries are about $2.50-4.50 each. The food menu features breakfast foods like eggs and toast, as well as french toast, served in various ways for about $12 each on average. As there is no menu online, I wanted to share these details. There were some quirks with the table service but as this is such a new place with a great deal of visitors, I think a little more time is required until things are in full swing. I will be back and it is definitely worth your time to stop in or sit for tea. I had the Thé Garden Bleu Royal and I recommend if you enjoy sweet and subtly fruity tea.

I hope these tips are helpful to you as you plan your visit. Enjoy!

Marion Street Garden + Brunch at Convivial in Shaw

Ready, set, slooow down...that's what a Sunday well spent means to me. Once I was back in DC I was so ready to take a walk and enjoy being home.

Logan was SO happy we were home. A weekend away and I have to say I missed him the whole time! Thankfully an awesome couple who are friends of ours were able to watch him while we were gone. We always joke they are his Aunt and Uncle, but it's really true. One time his "uncle" brought him to get fries at Chik-fil-a.

He is so funny! There are certain homes he just desperately wants to visit. I like to think there are nice people living there and he just knows it! Or ya know, maybe just a furry friend.

How cute is this lavender house?! They had all kinds of pots with bright yellow flowers in them, too. I couldn't capture all that from this angle.

Isn't this amazing?! A whole plot of land maintained and cared for by a small, neighborhood community. The Marion Street community garden is located on 6th and Marion Street NW, the closest metro stop being Mt. Vernon or Shaw. And the G2 bus stops one block away on 7th and P!

Thank you to Sarah of District Damsel for showing this to me when we got brunch a few weeks ago. This garden is the type of thing that makes living in the city really meaningful. I'm glad it exists and is so tended to. There are herbs, veggies, and a compost set up. Visit here for open times and more information.

I would just LOVE to have a veggie or herb garden of some sort. Right now it is not entirely possible, but I have been eyeing some cute herb container gardens that could work. When we lived elsewhere, I had grown all kinds of herbs on our back porch. There is nothing quite like cooking with fresh goodness from your own garden.

When Logan was a puppy he used to help me garden! (I have some photos!!) He loved eating sage and chewing on the tiny shovel. It was SO cute!

Convivial for brunch is always a good idea. I love going here for anything from a big ol' burger or filling, yummy vegetarian dish. One of the most raved about dishes on the brunch menu is this whitefish salad sandwich- topped with lemon juice, sunflower seeds, and edible flowers. I had to try it and yum...

Do you ever feel like Sundays are just wasted? I get that way. Sometimes I have done nothing just to avoid my to-do list. It means sitting around and in the back of my mind feeling stressed about what I should be doing. Ever since I let off the pressure to have every single thing in order before the week begins I am happier.

Instead I choose to focus on a handful of priorities and then the rest of my relaxation time is guilt-free. Because let's be honest, there is always more to be done! I left out a portion of my day because I think it deserves a post of its own- preparing meals for the week. I hope you'll be back for that!

Thank you so much for reading and have a wonderful, wonderful week!

Rooftop Relaxing Featuring a Cute, Packable Sun Hat

Every single day I wear sunblock, sunglasses, and generally try to do everything I can to protect my skin from sun exposure. For so long I never wore hats like this unless I was at the beach, but right now I am crazy for them! Why not wear one on one of my weekend walks with Logan? Or sitting outside having coffee?

This sunhat is easy to carry along because it folds and unfolds easily. The navy color and shape are really versatile, so if you do not normally wear hats casually, I think this is a good one to start with and at a low price point. You can find it here! And don't forget to use code: SWANN20 for 20% off your whole purchase!

This weekend feels like a whirlwind after catching a late night train to Philly for a wedding and now an early train back to DC today. I definitely need some time relaxing on the rooftop today and cuddling Logie! Happy Sunday to you! May it be well spent.

Draper James Girl // The Cloister Shirtdress

Washington, DC, USA
My love for Draper James is so real. It is one of the few brands I just feel so passionate about! And who says living in DC isn't like living in South? Technically, it is the South! Between the sweltering heat, my love for baking, and my husband's Tennessee twang that comes out, it sure can feel like it, too. To make things complete, this lovely dress! It made me feel...

Graceful
Fun
Lady-like
Pretty
Effortlessly elegant

This silk dress is the definition of perfection and the ideal investment piece. It can be worn on so many different occasions- with heels, flats, even adorable sneakers. Made with quality and charming details plus elegant accents like lace inset shoulders, I could not love it anymore.

The ruffle on the sleeves and skirt is gentle and gives just the right amount of movement. Believe it or not, there are pockets, too. This pretty dress is currently on sale, so if you are thinking about getting it now is the time!
