Casual Spring Style + Best Cold Brew in Washington, DC // Adorn

1201 S St NW, Washington, DC 20009, USA

It's the weekend and there is so much to smile about. Trees are blooming all over Washington, DC and this particular afternoon called for my favorite cold brew from The Coffee Bar at the S St NW location. It sits right at the corner of a pretty neighborhood and the outdoor seating provides a breezy place to sit outside and read a good book. Conversations are lively but hushed. The cheesy scones- which often sell out, and the almond milk lattes are really yummy.

Logan was loving all of this! The warm air was such a delightful feeling. I decided to try out my new booties (from Target, under $40!) and I l-o-v-e them! Booties are such a cute, versatile look, and this color will coordinate with everything from boho to preppy looks. The perforated detail makes them perfect for spring and summer. Having to walk most places, sometimes I prefer a more structured shoe like this over a sandal or sneaker.

The jeans I'm wearing are actually ecru and not pure white. I decided on this shade over the standard white because I think they will look great in the fall. An extra season to wear them? Yes, please!

And last but not least, here is a video with some highlights from the day and details of this spring look. Check it out below!

PS: Do you enjoy these videos? I have been keeping them to a minute or so, but I would love to know what else you might like to see, so please let me know! I really love the way video captures a little something extra and they are fun to make.

Free People Tunic + Nude Wedges // Adorn

8th St NW & F St NW, Washington, DC 20001, USA
Color, texture, and the way this tunic drapes on the body creates the most feminine look to me. When I wear this, it makes me feel...

graceful
grounded
relaxed
beautiful

These Madewell jeans have been hemmed to hit right at my ankle bone. One time I went crazy during sale and bought six pairs! I brought them to the store and they were all hemmed for free within a week.

Another great thing about this tunic? It can easily be worn as a dress! I hope to share another post in the future wearing it as such.

Sometimes the most dramatic, eye-catching looks can be the most modest. In my life I have learned to embrace more flowy looks so much. I used to avoid anything "baggy" altogether. Everything I wore had to at least come in at the waist. It is crazy to think that I felt I had to dress that way. If there are things you feel that you have to wear, ask yourself why. If it has to do with what other people will think then I can share with you that it is liberating to dress yourself for yourself. In the past I felt I had to appear to the world as slim or in shape all the time. These days I feel much differently. I accept and love my body now more than any other time in my life, yet usually I would rather be mostly covered. So be it! We have nothing to prove to anyone. Style is our own.

Thank you again to Tenneal of in11views, who captured these photos. She is a wonderful soul. And I love how she empowers women with her work.

Byron Lars Sheath Dress from Anthropologie // Adorn

8th St NW & F St NW, Washington, DC 20001, USA
Ladies, we are in luck! There is a 20% off full price purchase at Anthropolgie this weekend. If you happen to be on the hunt for the perfect little black dress, look no further. This was one of the best investments I have ever made in my wardrobe!

Two years ago I bought this dress for my husband's holiday party. It is still top rated on the Anthropologie website, where you can see in the reviews that women that of all ages and body types have worn this for countless occasions. I remember a review from a woman who brought it with her to Paris! I never pack anything dressy for travel (unless I'm going to a wedding), but that sparked inspiration to remember to bring along a little something special next time I travel somewhere like Paris.

This dress is perfect for so many reasons. Whether you unclasp the top and bottom for a more sultry look, or keep things together for a more traditional style it is so, so feminine and alluring no matter what. Plus the ribbon around the waist...love! Here's to you looking beautiful in this classic dress! And right now is the best time to get it with the extra discount.

PS: The petite sizing for this dress was incredibly tiny- like I could not move in it tiny. I'm on the smaller side but the regular sizes may fit better even if you can or usually wear petite sizes. Happy shopping! Comment or message me if you have any other questions!

Spring Self-Care Rituals // Nourish

Washington, DC, USA
Confession: spring is my least favorite season. Womp, womp. What a way to start a post like this! But I cannot pretend like all the allergies and the unpredictable rain storms don't get to me, because they do. Instead of wishing away the days until summer I want to embrace this time. My winter rituals helped me appreciate winter for the first time ever, so I have experienced how self-care can transform my attitude and well-being. Most of all, when we care for ourselves in these small, but powerful ways it encourages us to go through our days with more kindness and grace.

Self-care rituals look different for everyone because each of our lives and needs are unique. The most important thing to remember is that they can be simple and minimal. Some days I can really indulge and other times it is really just one thing. All in all it's nice to have a few things at our fingertips that can help bring some peace and calm to daily life. No matter what you do it is precious, well-deserved time. The list below is not exhaustive, but they are my most favorite things I have gathered for spring.

A dry brush
The perfect way to perk up in the morning...before you get changed use this brush gently all over your body, stroking towards your heart. It is refreshing and oh so invigorating. I also do this when I am sick or stuffy to give my lymphatic system a boost.

Natural massage oil
My favorite, favorite thing! I never imagined I would be using an oil to moisturize my body but it works so well and my body soaks it all up. Best of all, there are no worries about synthetic fragrances with this oil. After dry brushing it feels great to use this oil all over. It is also really relaxing to rub all over your legs and feet around the time you want to unwind before going to sleep.
"Abhyanga is the anointing of the body with oil...The Sanskrit word sneha means both “oil” and “love,” and the effects of abhyanga are similar to being saturated with love. Both experiences can give a deep feeling of stability, warmth and comfort." - Banyan Botanicals

Plenty of face and eye masks
The face and eye masks shown here are products I was able to try on my yoga retreat and later repurchased myself because I enjoyed them so much. These are great anywhere, anytime. On planes, while taking a bath, relaxing on your  yoga mat (or the couch with a towel over your pillow or shoulder).

Sweet orange oil
This is most uplifting scent ever to me right now. It is only a few dollars and my favorite one is sold at Whole Foods, so it is easy to find. During the winter I go for my peppermint oil the most, but this light citrus scent is a nice transition to the sweetness of a season when things are blooming all around. I like buying smaller bottles so I can keep one with me wherever I go. When I get to work I add an oil to my diffuser and that really helps me feel more comfortable when I'm at my desk.

The perfect eye pillow
Be it before bedtime or naptime, an eye mask is an incredible helper. I'm not saying you have to get this same brand as I have shown, but you really, really should consider it. It's the most natural feeling to me and doesn't slide off easily.

A self-care routine is about giving yourself loving attention. Sometimes I will be dry brushing but find my shoulders becoming tense. Or as I stand to apply a face mask I will find myself kind of slouching, just trying to get it done. I try to gently remind myself to shift my shoulders down away from my neck, to stand with my weight balanced on both feet or find a comfortable seat, relax my jaw, to breathe...the most beautiful part of this routine is that as you are physically caring for yourself your mental attitude can begin to shift as well. This is the time to check in with yourself and how you are feeling.

This month I was able to attend a Nourishing Rituals workshop hosted by yoga teacher Catherine Zacks of Flow Yoga. It was an afternoon filled with so much love! She asked us to consider supports and barriers to our ideal day. When it comes to time in my day for self-care, a huge barrier for me is that I convince myself that my time could be spent doing something better, something less selfish and more helpful or urgent. But you know, my mood and my confidence are much greater when these rituals are active in my everyday life. It helps every other task throughout the day happen with more patience and lightness.

For more reading on self-care I frequently turn to Claire of Vidya Living. I am so grateful our paths crossed in life. She is just amazing and has so much wisdom to share. (Also, she used to live in DC!) Claire is the one who taught me all about self-care as it relates to Ayurveda. She has a powerful, beautiful post with more information and more details on morning rituals.

Embroidered Booties at the National Portrait Gallery // Adorn

8th St NW & F St NW, Washington, DC 20001, USA

Guys! This was my first shoot for the blog! It was so much fun. I met with Tenneal of In11Views Photography and had the best time. We hung out at the National Portrait Gallery one Sunday morning and captured this cute, casual outfit featuring J.Crew, Madewell, and Anthropologie. A triple win in my world! This is definitely an outfit I could see wearing during this crazy transition from winter to spring.

Oh you now...just letting the wind do it's thing in my favorite cozy sweater! A sweater that is a hand-me-down from my Mom! Yep. She has amazing style. It's the Ryder sweater by Madewell and once it comes in stock in my size and color, I'm getting another one. It is absolutely soft, warm, and slouchy without being sloppy. The whole thing has this great stretch to it so it is easily worn it over anything. (Including those cute ruffle sleeves, which are popping up everywhere right now!) While not the most glamorous thing to feature, it's so necessary! At the end of the day, a girl's gotta have that one sweater to wear with anything and it can look cute.

And let's be real- this whole outfit is made by these embroidered booties by Jeffrey Campbell. The details on them are incredible. Overall, I tend to go for more simple tops without any patterns, so shoes can really change the whole look. These booties made me feel so feminine and fun. I love 'em! While I could not find the exact ones online anymore, I bet there will be plenty coming out for spring.

"Walk as if you are kissing the Earth with your feet." - Thich Nhat Hanh

I find a place to be barefoot. When I stand on cool, wet, grass, or a hot stone that's been warmed by the sun, I can feel that the world around me is moving. Time is passing and there is nothing I can do to change a single thing. In that moment of powerlessness, a transformation begins. Knowing the earth is doing her part in giving me space to breathe and stand, I begin looking inward.

How am I the same person as the woman who stripped off her sandals to feel the sting of heat on this stone? And more importantly, when is the last time I did this? Without even a yoga mat between my skin and the ground?

I hear my place is at the table, where I can share my ideas.
I hear my place is in the kitchen, where I can prepare fresh food to nourish myself, and others.

But my place is also right here. In stillness, vulnerably bare. It is what I hear the least, but it moves me the most.

I can say with certainty that bareness used to scare me, but now, it is something I crave.

Red Lace Romper // Adorn

Washington, DC, USA
This lacey number made me feel...
feminine
romantic
fierce!

As such, it feels right to share this the day before International Women's Day. A day on which many will be wearing red in recognition of all the social, economic, and political achievements women have made. Meet the Eve Romper by Lovers + Friends!

The open back teamed with the plunging front were difficult to work with in the boob-area, if ya know what I mean. So be ready to go bare or get your best backless-strapless bra ready to go. I'm wearing a size small here and that fit well around my waist and hips, but was just a little loose on the top.

The $188 price tag made me seriously consider just how much I wanted this but I was looking to add something a little daring and flirty to my closet. So, this pretty piece is coming with me on my next private, intimate date night with my hubs!

If you are willing to wait 3-6 months (my best guess), watch for it to possibly go on sale at Revolve, though I have seen sizes sell out entirely in other colors from different stores. If you love it, get it girl! And wear it wherever and however you feel most fierce!

And as for tomorrow- I'm going to remember the women who came before me,
the women who shape my life today,
and the kind of woman I strive to become.
We are amazing, powerful, and beautiful. Yes, it is true!

A Warm Welcome to Swann Street Style

Washington, DC, USA

Launching my blog on my birthday weekend makes me pretty darn happy. Though I do get two weekends this year since it's a middle-of-the-week birthday! I have long awaited sharing on my own space like this, so I warmly welcome you here.

Swann Street is a beautiful street in northwest Washington, DC. It is lined with gorgeous gingko trees and row houses galore. I walk through it and I remember all the reasons why I ever wanted to leave my home in South Florida for a life in downtown DC.

In my heart, I imagine myself in a farmhouse with a huge garden to grow herbs and veggies. The flower crowns I love to make are a connection to the part of myself that finds great happiness near mountains and forests. But at this time in my life I am city-bound and loving it.

The seasonal transitions are beautiful. Smaller living space can be enough. Time for cooking and nourishing myself is sacred. These ideas have grown from the freedom and constraints of city living and inspire what I share here.

This blog is a place that welcomes slippers and messy top knots. Makeup-free faces and dreams about the future. The crazy awesome days and the ones I'd like to do-over. My greatest hope is that you find it adds some happiness to your day whenever you stop by.

Welcome, welcome, welcome...I am so glad you are here!
